Pesca Maya, Ascension Bay

Pesca Maya, Ascension Bay

Only 90 miles south of Cancun lies the spectacular Ascension Bay. Located within the protected biosphere reserve, it offers an endless series of flats in wadeable crystal clear water, as well as mangrove lagoons, channels and reefs.  These are all home to large numbers of bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, barracudas, jacks, snappers, grouper and others.  Its hard white sand flats provide ideal wading for bonefish.

Pesca Maya fishing lodge itself was established in 1996.

The Fishing:

If you are looking for good flats fishing, without a doubt the world famous Bocapaila and Ascension Bay flats are an ideal choice. Both can be fished from Pesca Maya Lodge.  Bocapaila lagoons are only a short distance from Ascension Bay.

Wind protection is one of the great advantages of this area.  There are always protected flats or lagoons where one can see and cast at the various species.

Ascension Bay is well known for it's endless wading flats, mangrove lagoons, channels and coral reefs.  Pesca Maya is located right on the northern side of the bay, having access to over 100,000 acres of flats, some wadeable, and some soft that require a boat.  But all are home to dozens of bonefish.

Permit inhabit the flats and may be found in channels, and on deeper flats that have lots of crabs, shrimp, worms and minnows.  Permit also follow tides.  In shallow water singles or doubles can be found; in deeper water they tend to swim in schools.  Permit seem to run with fish of similar age groups and sizes.  Permit have been observed moving with the wind, cruising in from deep water onto the flats to feed. They move fast and with purpose, and you can see them coming from far away!

Fishing for Tarpon at Pesca Maya can be divided into two categories: Baby Tarpon (up to 30lbs), and Medium Tarpon (from 30 to 80lbs).  In the waters of Ascension Bay, you can find schools of Baby and Medium Tarpon lurking in the mangrove areas.

Like tarpon, Snook like being around brackish water. Snook are always found under cover so that they can attack wayward wandering minnows. They can be very aggressive, attacking the fly with vigour, as distinct from bonefish, permit or tarpon.

Jacks can be found anywhere on the flats.  Unlike many of the other species, they will attack anything they can get their mouth around.
